Hazel Plater (she/her) is a photographer based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North East of England, working mainly in the documentary genre. Her work brings together environmental portraits, street photography and landscapes in order to visually storytell and describe.
With a focus on themes of resilience and identity, Hazel portrays the nuances of places, communities and individuals. Her immersive approach allows her to build trust with her subjects, ensuring that her images reflect both personal stories and broader social dynamics.
Hazel is largely self-taught, developing her skills through experimentation and mentorship from fellow photographers. She has gained recognition through exhibiting work and small press publications and is the recipient of Shutter Hub's Newspaper Club YEARBOOK Award 2024.
Now balancing commissioned work with personal projects, she plans to continue her investigative work through long-form projects, exploring what shapes communities, in areas she is familiar with and beyond.
